Patients seeking body contouring often confuse liposuction with abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Liposuction extracts stubborn localized fat deposits in patients with good skin elasticity. In contrast, a tummy tuck excises redundant lax skin and repairs rectus diastasis (separated abdominal muscles) following significant weight loss or pregnancy.
Liposuction removes fat cells but does not excise loose skin. If significant skin redundancy exists, a tummy tuck or skin-tightening energy device is required.
